A car rental vehicle inspection checklist that holds up

The eight-shot walkaround

Stand at the front-left corner and work clockwise. Eight photographs, always in this order:

  1. Front: straight on, showing the bumper and both headlights.
  2. Front-right corner: at 45 degrees, catching the wing and the front of the door.
  3. Right side: the full flank, from far enough back to get both doors and both wheels.
  4. Rear-right corner: 45 degrees, catching the rear wing and bumper edge.
  5. Rear: straight on, bumper and both tail lights, with the plate visible.
  6. Rear-left corner: the mirror of shot 4.
  7. Left side: the mirror of shot 3.
  8. Front-left corner: the mirror of shot 2.

Then four more that are not part of the walkaround but matter just as much:

  1. The odometer, with the reading legible.
  2. The fuel gauge, with the ignition on.
  3. The interior, front and back seats.
  4. The boot, showing the spare, jack and tools.

Twelve photographs. Under four minutes once you have done it twice.
